Mobile Pastoralism is the most Efficient Livestock Farming System (Day 3)

Apr 18, 2019 | In the Field, Photo Stories

3 days into the migration and the herd has moved 22km – from and altitude of 230 meters to one of 790 meters. As they climb, both the herd’s and the Bacak family’s moods improve. Mobile pastoralism is the most efficient and sustainable livestock farming system in terms of its use of natural resources, water, energy and land management. Herds move between pastures according to seasonal availability, making mobile pastoralism the only sustainable way of turning sunlight into food for those who live in areas unsuitable for agriculture. The strong legacy of mobile pastoralism in the Mediterranean basin is one of the reasons why the region is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.
